Why Did I Become An Attorney? To Make A Difference In People's Lives.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my law practice. First, let me assure you that I understand how difficult it is to have a family law problem that requires a lawyer. Let me also assure you that hiring the right lawyer is the first of many important legal decisions you will be making over the duration of your case.
My name is Jennifer Hawthorne. Prior to studying law, I worked in the financial services industry. When I knew I wasn't doing all I could to make a difference in people's lives, I went to law school to change that. While in law school, I worked with a few public service agencies, including Greater Boston Legal Services, where I worked with low-income tenants with various housing issues. I also worked with The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law of the Boston Bar Association, where I helped people work through race and ethnicity-based discrimination claims.
Upon graduating and passing the Massachusetts bar in 2011, I had the privilege of opening my own law firm. In my practice, I focus on the legal issues that make the most difference in people's lives, including:
- Collaborative divorce and family law, with a special emphasis on alternative dispute resolution (ADR), including mediation, prenuptial agreements and common sense strategies for negotiated parenting plans and property settlements. In Massachusetts, there are also ADR options for non-married parents. My objective is to find solutions that avoid the high financial and emotional costs of litigation. I will show you options that will help you arrive at a fair outcome without the expense of deposition documents, filing legal motions and attending hearings.
- Estate planning services, including wills, trusts, advance directives, guardianship and the process of nominating a guardian, and administrative matters that will protect your family from unnecessary probate decisions and litigation involving transferring your assets to heirs and beneficiaries. Many people who come to me for divorce and family law matters also need assistance with estate planning strategies following a life-changing event such as divorce or remarriage.
